OUR STORE

At Main Street Books we specialize in St. Charles' local history and guidebooks, Western history (including Civil War and Lewis and Clark) and children's books, but our store inventory includes all categories. We also offer selected used books.

We host two book clubs each month and frequent special events. Don't forget our Frequent Buyer Program. Buy 12 books and receive the 13th free (average of prior 12 purchases). Ask for your card today.

The store is located in the Historic District in St. Charles, Missouri. You can find directions on the sidebar to the left. Our building is more than 190 years old and was the residence of the first Secretary of State of Missouri, William Pettus. Want to know more about historic St. Charles and what has survived until today? See below.

DON'T LET THE BRIDGE WORK ON I-70 KEEP YOU AWAY

Hey, it's not that bad, especially if you travel outside of rush hour. The lanes are narrow, but okay to travel. The exit to northbound Fifth Street is open; just be sure to stay in the right lane across the bridge.

There are excellent alternate routes.

If you are coming from St. Louis County south of I-70, take Highway 364 (the Page extension). Turn right after you cross the Missouri River bridge, follow Arena Parkway past the Family Arena. Go straight through the traffic light, and turn right at the next light on to Main Street. You will be here in no time.

If you are coming from St. Louis County north of I-70, take I-370 to St. Charles. Take the first exit past the Missouri River, and go south on Highway 94. Follow the signs through the roundabout to Second Street, then turn left on either Clark or First Capitol, and right on Main Street.

If you are coming eastbound from St. Charles County, there is no change. You can exit at First Capitol Drive if you prefer to avoid any backup at the Fifth Street exit.

If you have any questions, please call us.

ST CHARLES THEN AND NOW by Vicki Berger Erwin and Jessica Dreyer, Arcadia, Trade Paper, $21.99.

A shameless plug for the book that Jessica and Vicki (our owner) put together contrasting old St Charles with what exists today. They collected pictures of buildings as they were at an earlier time and Jessica took pictures of them as they appear now. Vicki researched and wrote captions to give a sense of history about the area, relying on a lot of the mythology that exists about the buildings. Hopefully, she didn’t make too many mistakes! Lots of customers have asked for a book like this. Stop by to pick up your copy. And if you have any questions about St Charles either then or now, ask Vicki -- she's here most of the time.

The guerrillas who terrorized Missouri during the Civil War were colorful men whose daring and vicious deeds brought them a celebrity never enjoyed by the Federal soldiers who hunted them. Many books have been written about William Quantrill, "Bloody Bill" Anderson, George Todd, Tom Livingston and other noted guerrillas. You have probably not heard of George Wolz, Aaron Caton, John Durnell, Thomas Holston or Ludwick St. John. They served in Union cavalry regiments in Missouri, where neither side showed mercy to defeated foes. They are just five of the anonymous thousands who, in the end, defeated the guerrillas and have been forgotten with the passage of time. This is their story.
